Easy Homemade Soft Pretzels

Raise your hand if you love soft pretzels?! 🙋🏻‍♀️

These are soft, moist, and oh so yummy! We don’t like salt on our pretzels, so we omit it, but if that’s your thing, top these beauties with those shiny crystals before popping them in the oven. Give them some bling!

Happy eating!

Easy Homemade Soft Pretzels

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups of warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted and cooled slightly
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • coarse sea salt
  • Baking Soda Bath
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 9 cups water

Directions:

  1. Using a whisk or a stand mixer with whisk attachment, whisk together yeast, warm water, and brown sugar. Once mixed, let sit for a few minutes until it starts to bubble.
  2. After yeast starts to bubble, mix in the slightly melted butter (if the butter is too hot it will kill the yeast).
  3. Switch the stand mixer attachment from the whisk to the dough hook (or use a wooden spoon) and slowly add 3 cups of flour, 1 cup at a time until the dough is no longer sticky (add up to 3/4 cup more flour if needed). Poke with your finger and if it bounces back, it's ready to start kneading.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead the dough for 3 minutes. Shape into a ball, place into a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let sit for 10 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  6. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly spray with nonstick spray or grease with butter.
  7. With a sharp knife, cut the dough into 6-12 equal sized chunks depending on how big you want your pretzels to be.
  8. Roll the dough into roughly 22 inch rope (playdough snake style). Take the ends and pull them towards each other so the dough forms a circle. Twist the ends and lay them on the bottom of the circle. SEE VIDEO BELOW
  9. Bring baking soda and 9 cups of water to a boil in a large pot. Drop 1 pretzel at a time into the boiling water for 20 - 30. Any longer will result in metallic tasting pretzels. Using a slotted spatula or a slotted spoon, take the pretzel out of the bath and allow excess water to drain off. Place onto the prepared baking sheet and sprinkle with sea salt.
  10. Bake for 12 - 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and serve warm with your favorite condiments!
  12. Enjoy!!!
